The most common way I'll use the image component in mockups is to take a screenshot of our current design, import it, and then make changes using mockups.

The missing feature that I'm missing right now (either requires me to do lots of different screenshots or (heaven forbid) just using PowerPoint) is the cropping feature. It is so handy to be able to isolate specific parts of a current design and reuse them for new designs.

Per favore!

Hey Adam, I don't understand. Which do you want to crop: a) an image when you import it or b) the PNG exported by Mockups?

a) crop an image after I have imported it into Mockups

I think this is really important. Very common workflow for me in PowerPoint now:
- Import the base image
- Crop it down to the piece that's relevant
- Position it

Often I find I'll use three different parts of the base image, in three different areas of the mockup. So I'll duplicate, re-crop, and then use that new piece.

In the above example, I might want to use the CNN.com logo, and then the video box, and then the search bar... all in different places.

Having to crop the image before I import it is challenging, since I'm not sure what I'm going to need until I'm in the process.

I am running into the same issue. I want to have a common backdrop for our application, but I want to crop portions of it so I can concentrate only on some small areas of the screen instead of the entire page.

+1 vote for cropping. It is a very common workflow for me also to import an image, and then crop just a portion out of it, discarding the rest.

For an implementation idea, I really like how iWork Pages does cropping. Images could simply have a switch: use cropping yes/no, and if yes, you have a simple rectangular crop mask, and you can keep resizing both the crop mask and image non-destructively. And if you switch away from the image component, only the masked piece of image is shown in the mockup.

I attached how it looks in Pages.

Cropping will be even more important in myBalsamiq. If you can crop, you can import ONE image and use it in many different mockups. Currently you have to import different images to get just the part you want.

Any news on when we might see this? It's a pretty important feature for me!

no news yet. This is something that can be done with other software already, so we consider it a mid-level-priority feature. We consider zooming and the ability to reuse components across mockups to more important than this, for instance. But we'll get to it one day, hang in there! :)

Just to add to this... I consider this a very important feature. Everything Balsamiq does can be done with other software. the value is in making it easy and in one flow (not having to open several tools!) Sorry, Peldi!

SnagIT does a fantastic job of not only cropping, but giving a variety of ways to focus on a specific area ('torn paper" look, blurring the background, etc. This would be an invaluable addition to the tool as often i have an existing image (or I take a screen shot) and yet really want to crop with some nice effect to show that i am only showing part of a menu, etc. for a mockup.

I really hope that this can get some attention. having this issue open for a year tells me that there's a missing opportunity that isn't being addressed in the product!

Hi Adam. This is one of those fun features that I really want to add, but I'm not letting us build any fun features until after we fix a bunch of bugs. We gotta get these GS email numbers down... :)

I would like to see croping, too.
Would be very useful when working with screenshots of existing software,
where you want to add some controls. Currently I have to "cut" the screenshot into two pieces in Photoshop.
A Crop tool would be a real time saver.

I really need this as well -- if users are going to other vendors for something this simple it could be a big win for you to add it.

Peldi - I'll trade cropping in balsamiq for showing partial period value in DigMyData.

Deal?

I'm new to Balsamiq Mockups, and my first (and so far only) frustration was not being able to crop images pasted into my design.

Other than that, I'm too in awe :-)

I feel the tide is turning - cropping is gaining momentum.

Without cropping a lot of things can't be simulated in a mockup, therefore it's VERY important in my opinion!

Love that you added crop but I'd prefer if the frame defaulted to the full image size... just my two cents. With the smaller default frame for cropping I usually have to move it and then scale (vs just scale with a full size frame) so it adds an extra step.
