Currently you can only make a copying drag by pressing alt prior to the drag.
If you press alt during the drag operation it appears to do nothing. If you had changed your mind or got the order of alt-then-drag wrong, you have to stop dragging (probably also undo the drag), move the mouse to where you were, hold alt then pick up the original object and finally make the copy.

There are some subtle issues about what happens to the original object when you do press alt, e.g. does it zip back to the original location as if you'd always been carrying out a copy drag operation?
