A comment on the question "bfp doesn't seem challenging for people my age (39)" in Posit Science:
It's actually a good thing to be "stuck" in some ways because it means that you're working at threshold, which is actually the point of the training. Most users get stuck in at least a few of the phoneme pairs in Tell Us Apart, and it's rare that any user gets to the final level in every pair. Good point about the exchange idea; I didn't look up your purchase date. We offer a 90 day refund/exchange policy because it's enough time to get through the entire program. Of course, not everyone starts immediately and we can't extend the date. So....it looks like you'll need to make your decision prior to completing 40 sessions. – Arielle, on March 17, 2010 20:49-

Hi aymeric - Thanks for sharing your experience with us thus far. Technically the product is capable of helping anyone. We specifically target adults, however our sister company Scientific Learning uses similar technology with elements targeted towards youth (K-12). Different people find different elements of the program difficult. You found the sweeps more challenging than the bursts, however many users have found the bursts more challenges than the sweeps. We've received quite a few feedback requests to make Match It! more challenging. It sounds like Listen and Do is indeed a challenge for you, as 4 instructions is a fairly average level. I'd focus on improving your ability to 5 or 6 instructions. This should help boost your memory and focus. Of course, the proof is in the daily life results. If you're not noticing results, I can understand your frustration. BFP takes quite a bit of dedication and time, and it's important to get a payoff for all that work! I'd suggest finishing this round of 40 sessions. If you're still feeling frustrated with the results, contact us for an exchange for InSight (within 90 days of purchase). InSight has more levels than BFP and it's unlikely that you will max out any of the exercises.
Arielle replied on March 17, 2010 17:51 to the question "BFP and tinnitus, statistical information?" in Posit Science:
Hi KM - Thanks for the good question, and the follow up report. I've put a question in to Dr. Merzenich's staff inquiring about his reference to tinnitus. In the meantime, I've found some interesting articles in PubMed. It doesn't look like there's a lot of statistical information, but there are some small studies that provide food for thought.
Just an FYI about PubMed for anyone unfamiliar:
PubMed.gov is a free search tool for biomedical articles. The database provides access to citations and abstracts, and links to sites where articles can be purchased. If you live near a public university, I'd highly recommend visiting their libraries for free access to articles. I live near University of California, Berkeley and their reference librarians generally grant access and help if you explain what you're looking for and why you can't find it outside of the library.
A comment on the question "BFP Training Limits? Can I train 6 or 7 days per week?" in Posit Science:
Beyond our general rule of thumb that one session/day is a good limit, we don't really have data available to answer this question. My best advice is to experiment and see what works for you. I look forward to hearing about what you discover. :) – Arielle, on March 16, 2010 18:47

Arielle replied on March 15, 2010 19:02 to the idea "How to print Brain Fitness Program reports" in Posit Science:
Update:
I apologize for taking so long to update this thread!!! For any Mac users who need help printing their progress reports, the easiest way to do it is to use Command-Shift-3 shortcut (saves to desktop) for taking a screen capture of your entire screen or Control-Command-Shift-3 (saves to clipboard) for each screen you want to print. You will need to first take a screen capture of each screen, and second exit the program and open a word editor. Paste the screen captures into the word document and print the document.
This is an arduous task, however at this point it's the only way to capture and print this data.
Arielle replied on March 15, 2010 18:27 to the question "BFP Interference? Do other mentally intensive activities conflict with or reinforce BFP?" in Posit Science:
I would actually suggest using your other intensive mental activities as a partial gauge of your progress with BFP. It can be helpful to do other activities in tandem with BFP because it can be a motivating factor for BFP, which is very important for successful and focused training. Of course, anything can be overdone. If you start feeling fatigued, take a break. Make sure to get good sleep. As I said in reply to your other question about the BFP training schedule, the brain consolidates new learning as you sleep.
We don't have hard evidence regarding this question, rather we have anecdotal feedback from users. I look forward to hearing more about your experience. Working on music in tandem with BFP has definitely been one of the most common strategies I've heard about from other users thus far.
Arielle replied on March 15, 2010 18:15 to the question "BFP Training Limits? Can I train 6 or 7 days per week?" in Posit Science:
Hi KM - The IMPACT study participants trained 5 sessions per week. That said, you could experiment with 6-7 sessions per week. However, you might find that it's helpful to have a day or two off. Our general rule of thumb is no more than one session per day.The maximum benefits are accrued when a night's sleep separates training sessions. This is because the brain consolidates new learning while asleep.

A comment on the praise "Great Recovery From Head Injury" in Posit Science:
Hi Mark - We haven't conducted studies with concussion survivors. The score you referenced for Jewel Diver is pretty average, however it is not really a diagnostic test. Rather, the score sets a baseline for the program to train you at threshold. Continuous training at threshold is the basis for improvement. Unfortunately we don't have a discounted price structure for Medicare. – Arielle, on March 15, 2010 17:32
