Well, you could start with loading them from published collections that are loaded dynamically (might create a small eco-system for people to create and sell icon sets).

Peldi, yeah, I'm still thinking dynamic loading is the solution to half the problems. :P

Not that I'm a developer or know Flex or Flash, but I'm wondering if it's possible to load an external .swf file that has the font embedded that might be treated as an embedded font. So Mockups could check if "font.swf" exists, load it if it does, and then treat the font as embedded font; otherwise use a system default as usual. If this is at all possible, all i need to do is create a simple .swf file with my font embedded and we get the best of both worlds.
