Ah I get it. I have no problem (and actually love) the hiding of the borders. If you can eliminate the "jumping" then I'd be sold.
Now that I say that though... a dropdown can be opened at any point so it wouldn't matter that the field grew. I just know that my eye looks for the arrow in the dropdown to click.
btw, any studies on what % of users click on the arrow in a dropdown and how many just click? – Adam, on March 08, 2010 21:10

I think the only thing I would change is skipping the rest -> hover step. I would aim my mouse at the dropdown indicator, then would have to move it to the right once the downdown were available (if I'm reading your mockup correctly). Just make the dropdown visible all the time and it's a one click operation. – Adam, on March 08, 2010 20:02
A comment on the idea "Adding icons from Quick Add" in Balsamiq:
Right - the downside is that you are doubling or tripling the number of items available through that list.
Wouldn't the list of filtered items continuously get smaller as the user types more characters?
When I type:
ex:
- "ch" I would see 19 items (can't see them all and would have to use mouse to select)
- but then I type another character "e", now I have "che", now I only see 4 (checkbox, Schedule (icon), tick (icon), and checkout (icon))
That's using your current icons/ui components in mockups right now. 3 characters get it down to 4....
.... (playing with mockups now)...
Ok, I did a little playing around I think I see what you're seeing. Ideally you type in just a few char and you are ready to go (just hit enter).
I like typing "i" or "icon" followed by a space that engages the icons. There's no affordance for the user with this option, but it may be the price to pay.
I do like the sizing option. That'd be the next "click killer". – Adam, on February 08, 2010 06:09

I suppose only inasmuch as they are driving support requests. I guess the other thing is that people have paid for mockups and aren't getting the full mockups experience - that would suck since zoom, pasting images, etc are newish features. (but maybe for those people mockups does what they need it to do...) – Adam, on February 08, 2010 05:54

Adding icons from Quick AddI know I put this out on GetSatisfaction a long time ago, but the search function here isn't good and I can't find it...
They say the best workers are lazy workers (get the job done with the least amount of effort).
With that in mind, I plead for you to add icons to Quick Add.
Currently it takes several steps to add a single icon (many more than what is necessary for a UI library item).
Some ideas:
Yes, adding icons to the list will clutter to the list, but Quick Add is for power users and folks who know what they are looking for. I need a shortcut (I bet others do too).

Beta TestingJust a heads up that we are doing some very early beta testing in BigBrassBand right now with just a few users. We're making lots of changes and fixes as we go and we hope to soon allow many more into the beta.

Email in BigBrassBandI realize I can just email you Mark, but how goes the implementation of email in BigBrassBand? Will it work for any email account?
