Zoom Zoom
Adding Zoom would be great.
Our team are all so used to viso - we're always hitting CTRL + Scroll Wheel to zoom in and out.
It'd be reall useful for lining stuff up, in more intricate mock ups.

Hi all. We also just added per-document zoom, pan and CTRL+wheel to zoom. Awesome! http://www.balsamiq.com/blog/2009/12/...

Inappropriate?Yes, that would be a great feature. Crazy hard to add for me at this point, but I have added it to the list nonetheless, I like a challenge! :)
-
Inappropriate?Yes - I would love this too.
-
Inappropriate?I'm working both with 20" and 12" monitors on the same mockups. Now its uncomfortable to handle my mockups with the smaller one. Zoom could solve this.
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?Zoom is top of our list at the moment. We place a load of mockups onto a single screen while we are working out the initial flow and navigating with the scrollbars is a little painful.
-
Inappropriate?I agree. This is sorely needed.
Zoom In and Out using:
CTRL + Mouse Wheel
CTRL and +/- keys
I’m excited for ZOOM
-
Inappropriate?I absolutely agree. Zooming and the classic Photoshop Pan (hold Space bar) would be heavily appreciated.
-
Inappropriate? My monitor is large, too, and I run at a high resolution. My widgets are so tiny! Need zoom!
-
Inappropriate?it would be okay even if we couldn't edit while zoomed out. just let me see a high level view (and optionally zoom back in to the area i clicked on)
-
Not okay for me! I definitely need to be able to edit at multiple magnifications: smaller widgets at higher magnifications and big groups of widgets at smaller magnifications. Presentation mode should still support zoom, of course, and we need not be able to edit there. -
I second Jeff's comments! -
I need editing in zoomed mode too, even if the pixel precise moves won't be visible while using Zoom Out. -
Inappropriate?I completely agree with Rob. I don't need to edit in Zoomed Out mode. I'd just love to be able to mouse-wheel out (holding a modifier would be fine), hold space to pan around (ala Photoshop), and then zoom back in. My designs are often just too big for the screen.
-
Inappropriate?Hi guys, so I'm hearing two feature requests here:
- a better way to pan around
- zooming feature to edit at all magnifications
For the first one, I plan on letting you hold down the space key and dragging, like in most graphic software. I hope it will help enough to not require a "navigator" like in photoshop.
For the second one, it will be tough but we'll get there. Remember Dreamweaver didn't get zooming until version 6! :)
-
Inappropriate?ultimately, editing at arbitrary zoom levels is good. i think that's the end-goal feature.
but simply zooming (without editing) has other applications (showing people the big picture, remembering the big picture, and navigation), and is [presumably] way easier to put in.
so i think it's a good starting point that can grow.
(edited: fixed typo, toned down adjective) -
Agreed, edit is better - but I would consider either progress. -
Inappropriate?I'd really like zoom too. I find it difficult to select large element groups on the page sometimes because it seems you have to drag a marquee around them rather than just clicking on them. (This could be a bug in itself I suppose). Being able to zoom out would be very helpful to me.
-
Inappropriate? Please concentrate on this feature. Its absence make me think about using another software.
I’m sad
-
In my very humble opinion, this is exactly how you will never have an answer from the company. This kind of threat never ends up with anything good. Unhappy with the software? That's life. Go elsewhere :-) -
Hi Regis, I disagree. Milhaus is clearly expressing pain, and I respond well to that. Milhaus, I know zooming is an important feature, in fact I miss it myself when using Mockups (I keep trying to CTRL+ and CTRL- to zoom in and out). I want to make sure we finish all of the half-finished things we have going before adding this important feature, give us a few more months. -
Inappropriate?I'll reiterate that Zoom is important to me (now that you got linking done, it's my top item).
I'm often using Balsamiq on different sized screens (my laptop, my home machine, my work machine). The screens I'm designing also vary in size. Plus, I'm using Balsamiq more and more to do navigation diagrams, so sometimes I want to work with a VERY large canvas, with multiple "mockups" on one canvas connected by arrows.
I’m happy

Inappropriate? One year over and no improvement about Zooming.
Sorry to say, but after the good start, now Balsamiq seems like an abandoned product.
I’m sad
-
Are you serious? With weekly updates Peldi has made many major and minor improvements to the application over the past year, even if Zoom isn't one of them.
Remember, while asking for zoom is as easy as clicking a "like" button or posting a comment, actually implementing the feature properly may potentially require a major overhaul of the application at the code level. It's far better for Peldi's team to attack less complex feature requests in addition to bug fixes before embarking on more complex new features.
Personally, I'm impressed by the development history of the application, and strongly believe that the many "missing" features we desire will eventually be implemented as time and resources allow. -
I agree with Jenni,
This is a mockup tool - not photoshop. Sure zoom would be cool, but Im afraid of adding too many features to bloat the product to the point that it gets in the way of what it is supposed to do very well - which is mockups. -
That's not to say I wouldn't like having zoom - In fact I think it's one of the biggest "flaws" that Mockups currently exhibits. But as I also have a development background I recognize that prioritizing the what depends a great deal on the how. :) -
Inappropriate?I don't think the importance can be underestimated. Design and layout is all about the balance of a page. If you have no easy way to get an holistic view of your design its actually quite a handicap. I know you can export and view the png (Why are exported PNGs soooo massive in terms of filesize btw - I simply import them into fireworks and export them again and they are 500k instead of 7mb with no decernable drop in quality) but that not really a workable solution if you are doing this job all day every day
I’m frustrated

-
Inappropriate?You are right Jenni.
I revoke the abandoned attribute.
Somehow I deleted the RSS of weekly updates from my reader. That made me think there is no update.
I apologize to Peldi.
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?I'm a first time user, I've downloaded the demo and started to try it out building a few pages.
The *first* feature I want is the ability to see my entire page on my monitor. I don't want to pan around (however easy) to add/remove things.
I think it's critical.
I'm excited to buy it and start using it with a few co-workers, but this is a real issue.
With software, especially software that's becoming popular, it's always easier to solve the small requests instead of tackling the big ones, especially if they require major re-working of the system. But, the bigger ones have to be addressed at some point. For me, now would be a good time for zooming! :-)
Thanks, Steve.
I’m dissappointed in the lack of a key feature.
-
Try to reduce the font size. And leave away unimportant stuff.
That's how I got smaller mockups. -
Hi Steve, Zoom is on our winter roadmap. Thanks for your patience. -
Inappropriate?Any sense on when we may see either of Pan or Zoom implemented?
I’m hoping at least Pan gets implemented soon.
-
Inappropriate?OK so some of you might know that Marco had a baby two weeks ago. Naturally, he took some time off.
Since he's so awesome and passionate about his work, he asked me if there was some feature he could work on during his break. Half-jokingly, I said "why not zoom?".
Sure enough, during his sleepless nights, holding the baby with one hand and typing on the keyboard with the other, Marco pulled through. He came back to work (on reduced time) yesterday, and together we brought the feature to "GetSatisfaction-ready", i.e. we're ready to get your feedback on it!
The build is here: http://www.balsamiq.com/products/mock...
A couple of screenshots:
The new View menu:

What we're calling the "zoom control popup" UI in the toolbar:

this is something we've never seen before but that we think is pretty effective (for those who really don't want to use the keyboard shortcuts) while maintaining the "pixel footprint" to a minimum. Try it out!
We know there are bugs. It's a deep, deep change. But it's an important one.
Please post your bug reports and enhancement requests here or email them to support@balsamiq.com - we want to take our time before we ship this, it's gotta be SOLID!
Two bugs I already found:
- scrolling past the bottom or right edge to resize no longer works
- on zoom in, the view should stay centered on where the mouse is
Please join me in congratulating Marco on his awesome programming powers and in thanking him for giving us this feature...with a week-old baby! :)
I’m ecstatic!
-
Inappropriate? It's funny but my immediate natural inclination is to hold space and pan. (: And btw, I LOVE that you used the standard CS/Photoshop zoom-keys.
I’m thankful
-
Yup PAN is next on the list, it's a sub-feature of this one really. We'll get it done, have no fear. :) -
Inappropriate?Seriously guys - great job. It's time to re-send your url to everyone I know (again)..
-
Inappropriate?YAY! It's brilliant! Really slick implementation.
This will be an enormous time saver!
I’m elated
-
Inappropriate?WOW!!, this is a great feature, something I have been after for a while now.
Congratulations Marco; firstly on your new baby, but also on getting this awesome feature implemented :)
Pan would be great as a next step, also CTRL+mousewheel for zoom in/out :)
I’m Impressed
-
Inappropriate? It would be nice if zoom in was done toward the mouse cursor. Let's say you want to zoom in on a specific region of the screen, simply place the mouse cursor there and zoom in.
But thanks for the functiuonality
-
Inappropriate?Wow - you've really out done yourselves now! Great stuff. I didn't even realize I needed this as bad as I do now!
-
Yay, glad you like it Michael, your opinion is super-important with us. Try the latest build (from a few minutes ago), lots of improvements already. -
Looks better. I am going to give it a full round of tests. Really wish there were mouse wheel bindings. -
Just added "add mouse wheel support to zoom" to our TODO! -
Inappropriate?Hi there, here's a list of improvements we made to the zoom feature today:
- ALT+Click to follow links in edit mode now works even when zoomed
- zoom to fit now stretches instead of just shrinking
- full-screen works again the way it did (at 100%)
- the positioning algorithm of the floating property inspector works even when zoomed
- the size overlay now shows the proper pixel-size of the controls, even when zoomed
- the behavior of zoom-in works "a la Fireworks": if something is selected, we center it as much as possible. If nothing is selected, we now center on the center of the mockup (ignoring the white space around it). Let us know if you like this behavior: the other option is to keep the current "center pixel" centered as you zoom in and out.
Still to come:
- scrolling past the bottom or right edge to resize no longer works, we need to fix it
- adding space+drag for panning
- possibly adding space+scrollwheel for zooming in and out
Let us know what you think! -
Will zoom be simultaneously released on desktop and JIRA? (and the plethora of other platforms?) -
That's the plan, yes. You can already test it on all platforms here: http://www.balsamiq.com/products/mock... -
I have only just seen this entry so I am a little tardy in getting to test this. I was still a little bedazzled by the new ability to change border on rectangles.
I am pleased that zoom has been introduced and can confirm that there is an issue with the shortcut Ctrl++.
My concern however is more with the fact that I seem to be zooming all the tabs rather than just the one I am on. If I have a large complex wireframe that I want to zoom out of to move around and then I want to copy on element of that into a new tab then both tabs are zoomed to the same amount. There is a related issue in moving around tabs. When I have a large wireframes movement left, right, up down on one is reflected in another open tab. If I want to compare/copy elements from one tab to another it is a pain that the two tabs try to stay in sync. I can send examples if that would help.
Lastly zoom does not focus on the current Item I have selected so I keep having to move right and down to ensure the item I am interested in stays on the screen as I zoom.
Despite all this it is still a good addition to the feature set. Well done, an excellent year of development by you and your team. I look forward to a 2010 full of great surprises and enhancements -
Inappropriate?Fantastic guys! My number 1 want fulfilled - thank you. Now I can get an overview of workflow on my larger iphone apps and not have to scroll all over the place. 2 defects to report you may be aware of:
1. when you use Cmd + to zoom in, at a certain point the zoom "flashes" back to a smaller size briefly and then pops back to the proper zoom level. Just use Cmd + for several steps and you should see it in this build. May be keyboard zoom related.
2. after zooming in and out several times, I encountered a weird Zoom to Fit bug where it doesn’t do a proper zoom to fit but put me in either a small zoom state or large zoom state but not zoomed to fit. To repro it, just zoom out sequentially several times and use the Zoom to Fit tool. It does this for me every time, either leaving me too small or too big. Go ask Alice...
Again, LOVE the feature!
Ben
I’m ecstatic!
-
Thanks Ben, we'll fix these on Monday! -
Inappropriate?Hello friends! OK so we think Zoom is pretty much ready (we only know of one edge-case bug with it, which we'll fix tomorrow). We'd like to release it to the world in the next couple of days (we have other exciting features that are waiting in line). Would you mind installing the latest pre-release version and see if you find something wrong with it? http://www.balsamiq.com/products/mock...
Thanks so much,
Peldi for the Balsamiq team
I’m super-excited about Zoom and wonder how we ever lived without it!
-
Inappropriate?Hey - I downloaded it and installed it. I love the feature! One issue I found - after using the 1:1 command (menu or keyboard) the zoom in keyboard command - CTRL++ - does not work unless I change application focus to another app and then back to Mockups. Then it works fine.
Otherwise, love it! Now, could use a "hand" tool to scroll by dragging the canvass itself. :)
I’m excited
-
You know Aaron, I see it too! It's a flash-ism, we don't get a keypress event at all in that case! The workaround you mention works, but so does simply clicking on the mockups canvas. Weird! -

Nice progress and cool features, as always!! :-) -
Inappropriate? This is undoubtedly one of the most useful and major improvements to the application. Combined with the Boundary Hinting Tool this is, IM(NS)HO, one of the best overall updates so far!
DOUBLE Snoopy Dance!

I’m a snoopy-dancing fool!
-
DOUBLE Snoopy Dance!?!!?? Wow, Jenni, that's just awesome. I feel like dancing too now! :) -
Inappropriate?Hi all, we just added per-document zoom.
http://getsatisfaction.com/balsamiq/t...
Check it out!

Ciao
Marco
I’m happy
-
Hey Marco, do you have some time left for your new family??
Amazing, as usual... :-) -
Andy, consider that I wrote 50% of the code of Zoom at home, with or without the baby in one hand. :-) -
Inappropriate? This zoom feature is maturing nicely. It now not only provides different zooming for levels for different open documents but it also focuses the zoom on the currently selected item.
however I find that sometimes if no item is selected no zoom in occurs (maybe its the fact that I have not clicked on any part of the image).
Here is how I create the issue
Open Mockups
Open two or more documents
Close Mockups
Open Mockups again two documents are automatically loaded
Zoom into the first document using Ctrl ++ (this works)
Zoom out again using Ctrl -- (this also works)
Click on the second document (zoomed to a different level - great)
Click back on the first document
Zoom in using Ctrl++ (nothing happens)
Zoom out using Ctrl-- (nothing happens)
Click on an object in the document
Zoom in using Ctrl++ (working again)
Hope this helps
I’m happy cause its getting better but not yet delighted
-
Weird, looks like a focus bug, we'll take a look. -
Inappropriate?Hi all, the first implementation of Pan is in the Next version. http://www.balsamiq.com/products/mock...
Just keep Space pressed and move the mouse around to scroll the document.
Please help me making it better!
Ciao
Marco
I’m happy to have Zoom and Pan
-
Again, nice feature! But you might hide the property window while panning, as the mockup jumps if the mouse moves over it. -
Wouldn't using ctrl or alt be more intuitive than space ? -
Hi Luc, holding space for panning is standard in Photoshop, Fireworks, Illustrator and other graphics software, so we went with that. -
Inappropriate?Hi all. We also just added per-document zoom, pan and CTRL+wheel to zoom. Awesome! http://www.balsamiq.com/blog/2009/12/...
The company thinks

-
Hmm, pan does not work for me anymore. I can see the panhand, but moving the mouse does not move the mockup (desktop version on Windows). -
You also have to hold down the mouse button, a la photoshop -
Ok, it does work with the additional mouse button pressed. But I think, it's not very logical. But that's only my point of view. Did you change this today? I think the demo this morning was different. -
Hi Andi, yes we changed it to make it work like Photoshop, Fireworks, Illustrator and others. -
Ok for me, if this is a common way to pan. One can still improve with the next version :-)
