Support for creating and using templates
Creation of templates would help in the cases where you have a product where many of the mockups are going to have a common container (generic layout for site). All the elements in the template would be part of a layer that you would place new elements on. This really assumes you get some sort of layer support.
Other aspects to consider is if you copy the layout information to the current mock up or reference it by file/guid/etc. How to handle updates to the template as well. Allow snap to the layout even thou you can't select it specifically. Of course, With layers, it may be moot to even consider this. I could just make the bottom layer the template and then start putting stuff on top.

Inappropriate?Hi Interlock, I have a way to do this right now which is similar to what you propose, but it uses the image import feature to achieve it. A video is at http://www.balsamiq.com/products/mock...
What I like about this is that it effectively does the job without adding any UI to the tool (no layers panel etc)
I’m hoping this helps!

Inappropriate?I think this is a very important idea.
From my experience with Balsamiq so far, apart from linking being able to save a project and using templates are the two things that I really wish Balsmiq had.
Now that we have linking, it makes using an image as the template even less appealing. -
Inappropriate?I agree with Andrew: linking is fantastic until you try to follow a link that's in a template image. I think I've mentioned this before, but I'll point it out again: being able to import a BMML file as an image that is not editable, but whose links are active would be a huge step toward solving this limitation.

Inappropriate?Templates would be a great feature to have. The workaround of a background image is usable for me, but cumbersome (insert image element, show proeprties, select 'Import Image...', navigate, etc). A good addition would be a new "Add Background Image" menu item, which allows selection of an image in the current folder and automatically adds the image element to the page at 0,0.

Inappropriate?I agree. The idea of using an image solves the issue of being able to reuse elements but often the need for reuse is connected to the need to reuse links, such as a page heder with a top menu. The ability to reuse locked objects with links would be really good. In axure, visio, powerpoint and omnigraffle this is done through backgrounds that are edited in one place but that can be reused in many places. Something similar for Balsamiq would be awseome.

Inappropriate?Hey Peldi, Are you planning on adding this feature within the next quarter?
-
Inappropriate? This would really make Mockups a winner. Any word on whether this is going to happen?

Inappropriate?I hope that you're still working on this! It's the one major weakness that I run into using Balsamiq.

Inappropriate?Echo that.

Inappropriate?Hi there. This is the #1 most important feature missing from Mockups. We know that. I plan on sharing our plans for it in a blog post soon.
You probably already know that, but http://www.balsamiq.com/products/mock... shows a workaround that works for many cases (but not all)
