Mockup Viewer
There are a couple of people in our team that never would edit mockups themselves, but who like to be informed about changes or must authorize the final design.
Currently it is quite some work to keep all png snapshots up-to-date.
A possible solution would be to create a "Viewer" version of Balsamic.
Another solution could be to be able to link a mockup to a png (using a relative path), so that the snapshots would be automatically updated when saving.

Inappropriate? The viewer would be great for me, then I could send the mockups to clients so they could evaluate the flow.
-
Inappropriate? How about a reply from the developers of Balsamiq on this one? I need to send my linked mockups to clients and my managers who do not have Balsamiq installed.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Hmm, could write an app to generate the HTML and image map stuff. All the info is there in BMML.
-
Inappropriate?I should need a viewer urgently, to be able to show my continuous progress to the client. Like the unregistered version of Balsamiq Desktop, but without any edit option and popup reminder.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Pleeease a Viewer.
It can't be so difficult to switch off editing capabilities
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Hi Laszlo, it's not difficult, but there are lots more important things on the list before this. I tried to answer this question in a FAQ here: http://www.balsamiq.com/products/mock... - it might give you some hints on what to do in the meantime.
-
Inappropriate? The more I use this tool (and I do love it), the more this becomes a major issue. I have a team of developers who are responsible for developing around my mockups, not including QA who also need to see my work. None of these people need to annotate or edit in any way, but generating PNGs is a failure point, as I've now had developers invest a number of hours in work for a PNG that didn't get updated when I thought it did - multiple times. I would say out of everything I'd like to see (pan, basic shapes, zoom) - this is my top request. It's the one thing that's literally resulted in lost money in addition to time.
That said, all I want is a version with no saving or editing of any kind - that they can download and view the mockups stored in our shared Dropbox. Until then we're going to have to use the trial I guess, which is overfunctioned and nags. ):

Inappropriate?Napkee can't solve the problem of missing viewer.
10 developers and testers would like to see the linked mockups in flow I make. I don't want to have them a right to edit.
10 license of a VIEWER could worth 100$ for us.
Sorry to say this, but for now my opinion about Balsamiq support started to change.
I’m sad
-
Laszlo, sorry you feel this way. We are heads down working on the web version of Mockups, which will allow you to send people a URL for your project so that they can browse and comment on the prototype. Once that feature is ready on the web app, we'll port it to the desktop app somehow. Give us a couple of months, there are a lot of important features and I am very well aware that this is one of them. -
Inappropriate? The web version has different use cases behind the scenes than the simple viewer. In my enterprise a viewer means: no URL, no Internet, no Login, no Comment, just to see and click mockups.
We are a security company. Please keep in mind that, during product development I cant send mockups into a 3rd party site. I would like to be able to show GUI plans offline.
By the way I'm curious :)
I’m unconcerned
-
I am also investigating creating a single PDF with one page per mockup and hot areas to link them all. That would work right? -
For me at least, PDF is an entirely different feature than what we're asking for here. For me it has the same problem - I just need to update and sync PDF's instead of PNGs. I'm not sure what the web version is so it's hard to comment on - but what I'd like is for my users to be able to click a file in a folder (in this case a shared dropbox) and open it in crippled version of Balsamiq. I'm also not asking for this for free - I'd be happy to pay $10-$20 for a Viewer (although I'm not sure it's the best strategy). If $100 would solve the problem for me, sign me up. -
PDF can't work. Maintenancing different formats is an unwanted effort.
Using PDF omit the great advantage of the XML file format, the easy version controlness. The BMML files are versioned controlled here. -
Thanks for the feedback. Have you guys seen this? http://vi.to/bmml/ - it converts mockups to html with image maps, which could be viewed offline in a browser. What do you think? Am I getting closer to understanding your requirements? BTW, the tool is free and open-source, and Vito is very responsive to making improvements to it. -
Inappropriate? It fails with the action called "Convert".
Download of "Official Balsamiq BMML Viewer" will make me happy.
Thanks for your further effor.
I’m undecided
-
Inappropriate?I use Balsamiq-Mockups for Dektop for a few months now. Since I'm very happy with it I recomended it to others in the team. But they had the requirement to give the mockups to the customer, so the customer can click through the linked mockups an give there comments. So they desided not to use Balsamiq-Mockups :-( In other words, this is a very critical feature in the evaluation process for a Mockup-Tool. I read that you know how importet such a feature is and just wanted to say so again. I'm hoping ther will soon be a viewer.
By the way: I tried the vi.to programm but without success, so I'm looking forward to a solution of this problem...
-
Inappropriate?Hello all, we just added the ability to export all the open mockups to a single PDF (with links between pages even!). Try it out here: http://www.balsamiq.com/products/mock... and tell me what you think, we'll merge the feature into the next official release in a week or two.
I’m happy
1 person thinks
this is one of the best points

Let us know if you find any bugs with it! -
Great Idea! Fireworks had this feature in CS4, not sure about rpevious releases... Really looking forward to having this available to me
Thanks so much! -
Inappropriate?Great Jobs guys :-)
I just noticed that I kind of missed out on certain updates. Will there be an Update option in the balsamiqDesktop version preference in the near future??
I’m wondering!!
-
It's on our fall/winter roadmap...more details here: http://is.gd/4RKzu -
Inappropriate? This is great, thanks for the update guys :)
One small request that I would make to build on this would be to be able to specify the mockup files to include in the pdf via some sort of file/directory chooser.
The reason being that for a large project I may have a lot of bmml files, possibly including sub-directories and the directories may have files that I don't want to include. It can be a pain to go through these and open all the files I want to include in the pdf into Balsamiq.
This functionality would also be useful for 'export to png', again allowing me to specify which files to export.
I’m Happy and confident
-
Inappropriate?I Love it. However some of my mockups are appearing with no links in the PDF. Should I send you these?
-
Glad you like it Michael! We ignore links that are "broken", i.e. go to pages that are not in the pdf. Could that be what's happening? If not, send me the bmmls, we'll take a look! :) -
Inappropriate?It's a very good feature,
even still not yet a viewer :)
Some enhancement issue
- Let me not specify, what files will be in the PDF, but follow the links from a top level mockup and collect wanted files.
- Because of page fit, the scales vary. Please keep exactly the same within a project.
- Let me set the page size
I’m kidding
-
Inappropriate? Thanks for adressing this issue. I tried it out. My problem with not having a viewer would be resolved with this. I really like it.
I tried it out but I have the same problem as Michael. A lot of the links that work in Balsamiq ar not on the PDF. The target is also a page in PDF but the link is not there....Tell me if I can help you by sendig this mockups -
Hi Bruno, yes sending me a zip with the bmmls would help. Are you sure all the mockups were open when you did the export? We ignore links that go to mockups that are not part of the final PDF. That was Michael's issue (we think). -
A 'follow link' method would solve it too.
What do you think Peldi? -
Inappropriate?A viewer would be ideal. PDF is good, but not as good as Balsamiq in full-screen mode. I have gotten around this by demoing from my machine with WebEx -- but I would love to be able to send a Balsamiq viewer and a "zip".
-
Inappropriate?Yeah, I'd like the ability to expose my mockups as restful web service. But before I can do this I need a viewer for my clients (either on the desktop or as a browser plugin)
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Hi all, so we're doing a few things to help with this:
- the web app will be a great way to share, just send a link and you're done. With access control and everything
- in the next minor release of Mockups for Desktop (next week), we plan on making a simple change to the demo version, relaxing the limitations a bit. The change is to let unregistered users open mockups. Still not save them, but open them. This effectively means that the demo version becomes a viewer, and a pretty powerful one at that - people will be able to open a set of mockups, go full-screen, click between mockups, zoom..., all without purchasing the app.
I realize that sending people a single file that can go full-screen is handier, and we can work on that in the future. The steps above is what we're doing short-to-mid-term.
I’m hoping this helps!
-
Sounds very good! :) -
Inappropriate?Hi friends, just a quick note to tell you that the ability to open files in the unregistered version of Mockups for Desktop went live today: http://www.balsamiq.com/blog/2010/02/...
Let us know what you think!
-
Was that intentional to leave the Export function to work? -
Yes, Import and Export have always worked. I believe in giving people who cannot afford Mockups a way to use it, even if it's not a very convenient one. -
Nice feature, I already had my first presentation with the viewer :-)
