How to determine selected control type?
Hi All,
Is it currently possible to determine the "type" of the currently selected control?
I ask as I've just downloaded some new controls from the Balsamiq site. Looking at a few of them, I keep saying "Hey, that's neat - what control is that?" Currently, I see no way to "Identity" a selected control.
If there isn't currently a way to ID a control, maybe its type could be added to the header area of the property inspector panel? Ideally, the listed type would exactly match the type shown in the UI library navigator.
Thanks,
Jeff

Inappropriate?I have thought of this too and one way I propose to solve it is to have the title of the property panel state the type of control.

Yep, I agree. That's exactly what I suggested above also.
Jeff -
Inappropriate?Hi guys, here's a workaround. Select the control, CTRL+SHIFT+E, Export Selected, add a paragraph control, CTRL+V. You'll see the name in the BMML there.
-
Inappropriate? Are you sure it's CTRL+SHIFT+E? On my system that is import!
-
Sorry I meant CTRL+E for export -
Inappropriate?Peldi,
Thanks for the workaround - I haven't tried it yet, but I assume it'll be helpful in this regard. Beyond that though, what do you think of including the control type in the property panel?
Jeff -
I'm hesitant to add anything to the UI unless it's universally useful. This one seems to me like a super-power-user edge case. :) -
Inappropriate?Hi Peldi,
I'm not sure I follow your reasoning here... ;^)
To me, this seems pretty standard. That is, most graphics apps I'm familiar with *identify* the selected object(s) somewhere in the UI.
For instance, I just started up Xara Xtreme and drew 2 rectangles and a circle. When I select the first rectangle, the UI shows "1 rectangle". When I add the second rectangle, the UI shows "2 rectangles". Finally, when I add the circle, the ID changes to "3 objects".
My specific example would be one use-case for such an enhancement, but I'm sure there are many others. The additional information is bound to be useful and doesn't seem "obtrusive" to me in any way.
Is there some technical reason this is difficult, or do you just not see any added value here?
Thanks,
Jeff -
Hi Jeff, it's technically very easy, but the beauty of Mockups is its simplicity. Adding any sort of UI to the app is something that pains me a great deal because it's a step in the wrong direction...I hope you'll understand. -
Inappropriate?Peldi,
It's not a big issue for me, so I'm happy either way. That said, I do find it an odd thing to omit from the interface.
Just to make sure we're on the same page (though I think we are), I'm only asking that the selected object be identified (with a single text label) in the property panel.
With that said, it's not important enough to me that I'll continue to attempt to sway your decision.
;^)
Thanks,
Jeff -
Inappropriate? Please ... add the name of the control type to the top of the property page! We are passing around larger and larger mock-ups within our team, and it is driving us nuts trying to figure out what controls people have used!
When I select a component, the property page ought to have a title that tells me what it is! Please! :-)
I’m frustrated
-
Hi Humancell, thanks for the convincing argument, I'll add this soon. In the meantime, have you tried my workaround above? I hope it will help! -
I did see the workaround ... but it is far too convoluted for the team to use ... too many steps. It seems such a simple thing to add the Component Type somewhere on the property page ... that really seems to be the intuitive place. Each property page seems to have SOME unique attributes per component ... so we're beginning to recognize them ... but ... :-)
