Hi, reading through other ideas, apparently you can add to the icon library with your own, but I can find nowhere that explains HOW! And I cannot figure it out by playing with Balsamiq.
So I'm choosing the Icon and Text Label Control. In the properties, the Icon Library dialog has no options for importing own images.
Help please!

Hello everyone! We discussed this at our retreat a couple of weeks ago. Here's a possible implementation, what do you think? https://our.mybalsamiq.com/projects/p... - feel free to comment / propose alternate ideas directly on that page.

Rob, currently you can't add custom icons, but you can use the image component to add a custom image to your mockups.
You can see the note in our FAQ: http://www.balsamiq.com/products/mock...
Hope that helps for now. I do have a more full featured set of icons already designed that I'd like to add in the future. -
-
But why not make it possible to add our own icons to the gallery. Mabye also an possibility to share custom icons with others.
-
This is in our task list, so it's under consideration for the future.
You might also want to look at what we're designing with the shared component feature. This will allow you to share whatever components you create. -

To answer Andy's questions, this is the icon set I design that I'm talking to the team about including with Balsamiq:

This is the set of pages describing what Peldi has proposed for the shared component design:

I'm with Frank, I'd love to add my own icons to the library. We could just create icon files of a certain format (png?) and size (32x32, etc.) and place them in a specified folder (C:\Program Files\Balsamiq\Balsamiq Mockups\icons) and have Balsamiq look for them there.
-
Thanks, Bernard. I've added your suggestion to our issue. I made a similar suggestion for max size, png format, and a different location, so we're on the same page. I was thinking we just use assets folders and an ico_[token].png style naming convention. A sub-folder would be easier. :)

Michael, one of the things we're struggling with is how to best share mockups with several designers. So adding icons is part of the issue, but we're also having problems with relative paths to included images. I'd love a blog article about the best way to organize a mockup directory structure.
-
Yeah, I could see that being a problem. In that case, account assets folder would be a bad recommendation, because if you packaged up a project folder and shared with someone, that path would break.
You're right, I should do a blog entry or tutorial describing how to most effectively organize directories for working locally and sharing with others.
Where I think we need to go with projects is to treat a project file essentially as a package, where all assets associated with the file can be embedded and bundled with it and sent around to others. One can do this in practice using today's version of Mockups by always checking the checkbox to include inserted images in their project assets, and always using project assets folders rather than account assets folders. When you share with others, you would then send the entire folder with the other person. Good way to package would be to zip the folder.
That would be the gist of my blog entry or tutorial. Will task myself with actually writing that up with screenshots wo we have something to show others until we get to projects.
Thanks, as always, Bernard, for the thoughtful feedback. -

I really wish there was a way to add custom icons. The current set is very limited.
-
I agree. It's on our plate to expand the icons, and we have a feature request for adding custom icons in our to do list as well. We'll get there.
I also intend to add sketch versions of the wireframe icons I've designed at some point. -

I would really find integrated custom icons to be a big help.
I've read this thread:
http://community.balsamiq.com/balsami...
...but just adding custom images does not nail the simplicity and transparency of experience that I would love to get out of Balsamiq.
Why would I want custom icons? Isn't Balsamiq supposed to be rough? Yes, and I love it for that. A rough mockup can ignore a lot of visual niceties, but icons often carry hefty semantic weight and I've found them to be important early in the process.

Often i want to use an icon in buttons that doesnt exist in your icon library. Would it be possible to have a category in the icons window called assets which will allow the use of images in the assets folder?

Have you considered making a way for people to export and import more icons? Then you can involve the Balsamiq community in creating and sharing icons. We'll help!

You need a MUCH bigger icon library: make it easy for us to share!. -

I would like to add my voice to the request for opening the icon library. I am trying to wireframe a mobile web app, but the specific toolbar icons are not available. I could easily make them and would be happy to share them with others. Is it difficult to open the icon library? Just point me to a directory would be fine (i.e., no interface needed).
Great product and keep up the good work folks. -

It would be great if we could extend the icon library to contain an additional set of our own icons.

The solution you propose is great on so many levels! Even in the current workaround solution (putting icons in the account or project assets folder), I'm prefixing icons with the string "icon_" for rapid access through quick add, so no problem with me. An alternative way of organizing and denoting icons as such would be an "icons"-subfolder in the respective assets folder - no need to rename existing icon files then. I'm sure you've thought about that idea but had a reason not to go that route?
