How about adding indexed tables for iPhone?
There is a table style in the iPhone called "indexed table" (The contacts app is a good example of it). Each section in the table has a heading, and there's an index down the side.
I've been able to mock one up with existing controls, but I think it could be a nice addition to the iPhone table.

That said, I like your idea. Question about the index (since I don't see your image), is it always A to Z?
