Font rendering problem after upgrading to Flash 10.2

Hi. Last night I upgraded Firefox 3.6.13 to 3.6.14. Mozilla then urged me to upgrade to latest Flash, so I upgraded from 10.1. to 10.2. I'm on OSX 10.6.6 BTW.

When I went to edit some existing mockups in Confluence, I was surprised to see a much bigger different between Comic Sans Regular and Comic Sans Bold. The bold was much heavier than before. This was kind of ok but more importantly, some words are now clipped.

The problem is reproducible in Safari as well, so I think it's the Flash upgrade.

See attached screenshot. Left half is Confluence. Right half is Desktop. You'll notice that the word "text" from "Some text" is missing from the label in the left column, 2 rows down. Even an auto-resize does not bring the word back. I see the same problem in the browser control sometimes. I'm trying to give the page the title "A A" but the second A is clipped. I have exported this mockup to the Desktop product and you can see it's still working ok there.

While trying to troubleshoot, another strange thing I noticed is that when switching to "System Font", the font stays in Comic Sans.

I feel like I'm going crazy here! I will try and downgrade to Flash 10.1 if that's even possible.

I'm back on Flash 10.1. The text clipping problem is gone. Font weights are back to what I'm used to. There is still some weirdness when switching to system fonts (only some stencils actual switch to Helvetica), but since I don't use this mode, I am ok for now and can keep working.

Hi guys. Just wondering if any progress has been made on this. I'm surprised no one else on the forums has mentioned the problem as I would assume it affects all web (non-Air) users. I tested Flash 10.3 beta and the same problem from 10.2 exists here too.

  We have had some text clipping issues in the last month or so that I've also noticed and Marco is aware of the issue, and this is on our list. I'm not sure where he is with that issue, so I'll ping him again to check in.

Hi Peldi. Yup - that did the trick. No more clipping. The only issue is I don't find the embedded font is quite as balanced with the rest of the UI as the previous Chalkboard font (see screen capture). It looks like the text inside the controls is maybe 1 pixel too high also.

  Thanks for catching the input offset, Eric. Do you know what build you're on? Try updating one more time to build 999.796 if you're not up to that, and see if this is resolved--doesn't look this way on my Mac.

Hey Mike. OK, I installed a newer build and the offset problem is gone. Looks way better!

Unfortunately, I have noticed a new problem. In some of my mockups, I was using unicode characters to add icons inline with text. See example below where I was using a triangle as a way to indicate a dropdown menu. Maybe I'm the only one using balsamiq in this way, but with the embedded font, the special character simply disappears.

I assume for technical or legal reasons, you cannot easily embed, say Helvetica, in the app?

  Eric, I will have extend the font a little bit to add additional characters. I'll add that to my to do list.
  
  We don't embed Helvetica more for licensing reasons, I think, but Mockups needs to have a handrawn look. For what it's worth, the new Mockups font is actually my hand, mostly modeled after Helvetica.
  
  We've been using fonts that are available on each system for that reason. Switching to "View System Fonts" gives you Helvetica, rendered in the app, however.

Thanks Mike. I know there is a triangle in balsamiq's icon set, but the smallest size is still too big for me and of course, I can't type the icon inline :-)

The new font does look nice. I'm noticing a few inconsistencies with size and spacing between characters though. It seems to be more of an issue at smaller sizes like the default 13pt. The lowercase "a" looks a bit bigger than other letters. I'm not sure if you're still tweaking...

  Eric, If you're looking for regularity in the font rendering, you may be disappointed. The bold and regular weights were actually drawn separately. You're right, for instance that the a at regular weight has a very slightly taller x-height than the bold weight. It won't be perfect, but it should be slightly less distracting. If you're aiming for perfection, you may want to stick with using system fonts.

When the balsamiq font makes it into the official version, that is the font I will be using because it matches the look and feel of the other UI components.

My ultimate wish though would still be for an alternate set of UI components that match Helvetica :-)

The combobox control is truncating text, no matter what width I make the box, but only at 13px type size (the default). I've attached an image to show the effect. I duplicated the middle one (13px) and the one above is 12px and below is 14px.

I'm using 14px to avoid the problem for now, but...

I'm using v2.0.21 Desktop on Windows 7 64-bit.

Inline edits, especially for tables and tabs, have lots of bugs where the end of the text gets chopped off. I have to add random characters at the end of the content to hack the text into appearing properly.

Adding a space does not always work. Sometime a non-whitespace char is required beyond it. Also, dashes in the middle of text randomly get swallowed. Inserting three dashses results in one dash being visible.

  OK. Sorry about that. The change in Flash doesn't handle font widths properly. We're all together working at a retreat, and we think our new font solves the problem from our tests. So hang tight, we'll get it fixed.

When I copy / paste a button (the button in the palette) from one mockup to the next - and the button has two words, the second word almost always disappears. This means I have to spend a lot of time retyping the same button from mock up to mock up.

Is there a property somewhere that's causing this? Any idea how to fix it? This only happens in buttons with two words.

I've tried resizing the button but that doesn't work. However when I double click the button to see if the word is still there, it is!

The only thing that fixes this is by double clicking the button and adding two spaces after the last word. Extremely annoying. Would love to see this fixed.

probabilmente sono incappato in un piccolo bug :(..

Stavo disegnando un mockup per un'applicativo iPhone quando ho inserito un bottone: senza modificarne le dimensioni, ho inserito il testo 'Dettagli', ma nel bottone veniva visualizzata la stringa 'Dettagl'.
Per ovviare al problema ho provato ad editare nuovamente il label aggiungendo uno spazio: 'Dettagli '. A questo punto la stringa è stata visualizzata (probabilmente comprensiva di spazio): a questo punto ho rimosso lo spazio ed ho ottenuto la stringa necessaria.

I'm creating a screen mockup and need to add a button labelled "OTHER ALARMS". However, when I do this, the button label only shows "OTHER". It's a bit of a strange one as if you change the font size to be anything other than 13 and bold and capitals it appears OK. It's only when the font size is 13 and bold and capitals that the word "ALARMS" disappears. If I type "OTHER ALARM" or "OTHER ALARMZ" then all the text is shown.

I've had this issue before and it's normally solved by restarting but on this occasion I can't seem to get it to work. I have added a Button to my mock up. I then add the text but for some reason it won't display the second word, even after I have re-sized the button to allow for the extra text.

When I use the Link control and put in the text Manage Reports the word Reports gets suppressed. I can put an extra space between the two words, or use some other text and it all shows up, but some combination of those two words kills the second word.

If I enter "Any Priority" in a Combo Box, only "Any" renders. If I add another word afterwards, it renders fine. If I change to "Any Priorito" it also renders without issue, so it does not seem to be related to string length. "Any Prioritu" also fails.

  Yes, adding a space or two to the end of the control usually fixes. The real bug fix is in progress. The font is done, it's been embedded in the AIR, and we are now testing.

  Wow. Um. That is a major change. All of my existing mockups are screwed up by the new font. I don't see clipping problems any more but now ALL of my text based controls have changed size - and therefore are all out of whack... seriously out of whack.
  
  I assume I can still choose to use comic sans and these changes will revert back, right? I'll go try that but I'd rather live with the tyranny of comic sans than redo all of my mockups (I have hundreds).

  Okay, setting back to Comic Sans MS *almost* gets me back to where I was (and it looks like the clipping problem may have been solved in general, not just for the new font, eh?).
  
  However, it also looks like you changed the default text style to be non-bold, which changes LOTS of the text in my existing mockups as well.

  Also, some of the controls don't have the option to turn bold back on... such as callouts.
  
  Please, please, please don't do this to me. I've got too much invested (and on the line) for everything to change (and need fixing) overnight. And I don't want to be stuck using 2.0 forever and lose out on other new features.
  
  If you are going this way, give me a mechanism to specify on a per mockup basis whether to use the new font style or the "classic" style (Comic Sans MS, bold default style). And make it easy (or automatic)... maybe an "opt in" function when you open an old mockup that will change it to the new style, but no changes if you don't use the function. And new mockups can use the new style by default but allow you to set it to "Classic" styling.

  Better yet, let me set the default font and style on a per mockup basis from within the UI rather than the cfg file. Even if you just give me a small set of options (e.g. "Classic", "New", "System").

  The FAQ is good, and as I get over my initial "WTF?" reaction, I realize I'll just have to invest a small bit of time for each mockup that I need to update/communicate, but I'll do it "on-demand" as the need for a specific mockup materializes. Unfortunately, when such a need arises, it usually involves small updates to a dozen or so mockups - these text changes will be additional burden.
  
  My "projects" extend over multiple years, with iterations and extensions to existing screens... it's a big commercial enterprise app.
  
  Also, I probably use the different text-based controls much more extensively than other sorts of apps. We deal with millions of records with hundreds of record types with tens of attributes. I love the grid control because it's so easy to mock up something with realistic dummy data. And I often overlay text-based controls with other things (icons, rules, lines, transparent rectangles, etc.) to get some of the interactive aspects across. So this is where I have to do quite a bit of work to adjust to the new font.
  
  I will adjust, but I was shocked at how much work I have to do on the 20-30 mockups I'm working on right now.
  
  I bet this change makes myBalsamiq a lot better, eh?

  This pre-release is working a lot better for me. There are just a few places I've had to go back and make some small adjustments, but it actually fixed a lot of the cutoff words that were there before and the text trimming that wasn't happening doesn't seem to be happening anymore.
  
  Thanks for your quick work on geting this issue fixed. And I must say getting rid of Comic Sans and everything being in bold by default has made this program MUCH MUCH better.

Not sure exactly what triggers this, but labels (and also a couple other elements: links), will automatically resize themselves so the last word in the string is no longer displayed. In order to fix this, I have to resize the label to make it larger.

Hi Peldi and Michael. After the initial "shock" that I'm sure others are probably experiencing, I am getting used to the new font, just like I got used to Comic Sans / Chalkboard the first time I used Balsamiq. I think after some growing pains, everything will be great. I read the font FAQ and really, there is no counter argument!

I'm wondering if you guys are open to font tweaking suggestions. I'm noticing minor issues, two of which I've outlined in the attached image. Basically, I see a kerning issue after some letters like lower case "f" and upper case "T" for example, and also I see that the lower case "g" is heavy compared to other similar shaped letter like "p" and "q".

I've attached an image to make this more clear. I've put my suggestions in the 3rd row. Let me know what you think and if you are interested in these kinds of suggestions in the future. Thanks!

  Hi, Eric. I'm also a little more than bothered by kerning, especially at large font sizes. I've been talking with Marco and investigating how kerning pairs work in Flash. Currently the metrics for kerning pairs aren't getting rendered properly in the app, but we're still working on it.

Why don't buttons show more than the first word? I type in "Button Two" and only get "Button", even if I resize it the width of the page, or use auto size. Same with "Where To?" - I just get "Where". This is when using the web demo to decide whether to buy the product. I'd really like to get this software, but two word buttons are common in my practice. Thanks for the help.
