Export selections
Export selection: It should be possible to export only the selection in a mockup. The inability to do this has forced us to stop using mockups for a large project where individual dialogs etc have to be separated out and put in to a functional specification document.

Thanks for the request, Matthew. Sorry we don't do export selections to PNG yet.
If you're looking for a way to Mockup selected contents to PNG, we do appear to have a feature request for that, but the demand has been low, so we haven't gotten to it yet. I'll raise the issue so we can see if this can be brought up for consideration.
Exporting selected Mockup data does work, although that may not be what you want.
- Select an object, objects, or groups
- Use the menu: File > Export Mockup XML
- Click Export Selected; you can then import that into new Mockups.
In any case your request has been logged. -

Hi Michael,
Thanks for the reply – and it arriving so quickly!
Since submitting the request, it’s occurred to me that there isn’t really any way of getting parts of mockups out of Balsamiq and into a Functional Spec or presentation written in MS Word or Powerpoint.
I work at a global bank, where Word and Powerpoint are the primary means of communication(!) No-one here knows of web-based applications like FogBugz, and none of the executive management (who review and therefore determine the format of this stuff) would ever use them.
Unfortunately, managing huge numbers of separate mockups (one for each dialogue, etc) is prohibitively difficult, so I’ve had to switch to standard-issue Visio. I reckon solving this problem would make it much easier to use Balsamiq widely in large organisations that still use standard desktop tools.
If I’ve missed something obvious, do let me know. Otherwise, keep up the great work!
All the best,
Matthew-
Hi, Matthew. You haven't missed anything. Like I said above, we don't have a feature right now to export selection to PNG or to clipboard, but I've added a feature request for that.
Right now we only export entire mockups to PNG or you can export a selection to BMML, which puts the mockup into the clipboard. This would let you copy/paste parts of mockups to new files and then save from there, but this is a bit more work. One thing you can do as a workaround is use the native screencapture capabilities of the operating system, or using a free utility like Jing to capture parts of the page and save to your computer.

Hope this helps. -

I've had pretty good luck just selecting the element (I usually keep each dialog grouped, so it's pretty simple to select), and just hit
Command-C
Command-N
Command-V
Shift-Command-C
Command-W
Tab
Space
Make that a macro and you have a very fast export onto clipboard for the current selection.
This would be nice to have as a built-in feature, but I find this a very usable workaround. Set as a Quickeys macro you hardly even notice it's not native. -

Thanks for the tip, Ian. I'm on Windows, but have worked out an equivalent key series. Now I just need a Quickeys equivalent!

Hi all, the new prerelease version (999.850) include new features:
- Export as PNG: works like Export XML, you can choose which part of the mockup you want to export (everything, current group, selected controls).
- Copy as image: when you Copy the selected controls, Mockups stores in the clipboard the snapshot of those controls. You can then paste it in another application.
Please let us know if you find any bug! :-)
