I’m
thrilled for the future
Thanks again for the idea! We are excited about this! As Peldi mentioned earlier, there are two parts to this thread. First is the request to add iPad controls to Balsamiq. We are actively working on this and will provide them in a future release. In the meantime, you can use some great options in MockupsToGo: https://mockupstogo.mybalsamiq.com/pr....
Second is a request for a Balsamiq app on the iPad. We are also currently working on this. No ETA yet, but it is in progress, and we are excited for the direction it is taking. You can read more in our FAQ: http://support.balsamiq.com/customer/.... Hang in there!
I am closing this thread to further comments, but if you also want to see this feature, please click +1 in the description above. We monitor this forum constantly and look at those numbers to help inform our direction and priority. We will update this thread when we have progress on this feature, so you can follow it to stay informed.
As you think of other requests and enhancements, please continue to submit them. We take seriously every request that comes in and will respond honestly and openly to it. Thanks for your help in making our product better!

Please, please, please make a version that runs on an iPad! You can add me to the list of people who would be willing to pay again.
Please don't make me use iMockups. Apart from the fact that they obviously just don't get the whole lo-fi vs hi-fi design rationale, I couldn't bring myself to use an app that has a faux woodgrain background. It's not retro - it's just bad.
Please, please, please...
Did I remember to say please? -
I know this thread is about iPad elements on Balsamiq, but I have to say that I too yearn to have a version of Balsamiq running on an iPad.
The idea of being able to sit around with clients and move elements around with them seems extraordinarily compelling. And yes, I completely understand that give Apple's attitude towards Flash/Air, this is probably not a goer. -
What I want is Mockups running on the Ipad !! It will be a real KILLER APP for us !

4Hi guys, I think you're asking two different things:
- UI controls specific to the iPad: we'll download the SDK and see what controls cannot be made with Mockups already.
- Mockups running on the iPad: we'll see what we can do there as well! Let us get our hands on one first. :)

@andygoundry those of us who DON'T want to pay $50 for an iPad app, and are frustrated with the existing UX mock-up apps.

I already use balsamiq and would love to be able drop the .bmml onto my iPad and be able to make changes in front of the client. Balsamiq is now an integral part of our workflow and switching to another application is not an option. What I do at the moment is export the .bmml to a png and then scribble the customer feedback onto the image on my iPad. Still pretty cool, but editing in place would be soooooo much cooler.

I did the same :( Despite saying SketchyPad was ok further up in this thread, that too is far inferior to Balsamiq Mockups. I've given up and am just using Adobe Ideas to draw with my finger until I get back to my desk.

As cool as the ability to run Balsamiq on the iPad would be, I have a much more pressing need to have a good tool to design iPad UI's with. Being able to easily work with the special iPad controls like split views, pop-overs, action sheets, etc seems to this uninformed user to be a relatively simple first step, which could be followed by a port to the iPad later.

I agree with Matt - I've used the two most popular wireframe tools on the iPad and find them "challenging" in such a small space. Unless some very clever zooming methods are used to give you more working room, it takes much longer to produce a valid mockup in my experience. I think of the iPad as a great way to show off your mockups done with Balsamiq elsewhere - just give us a viewer with annotation features and I'd be more than satisfied. So I vote for just giving us some great iPad controls for the other platforms, and a way to access and show/markup them on the iPad. The holy grail for me would be - create a mockup on desktop
- send to the ipad in easiest way into a Balsamiq "review and markup" tool
- round trip back into my desktop version for iterations
- rinse and repeat

One question and one point:
1) Immediate need: some way to demo an interactive Balsamiq mockup on the iPad. The PDF export is good, but when I launch it on the iPad it loses the interactive links between pages. XML export appears to only be page-at-a-time and doesn't work for the 50 pages I have the in mockup. Has anyone gotten this to work in any format?
2) Getting the simply/fast interaction that exists in the full app into an iPad app won't be easy. If it's going to work on the iPad there has to be lots of shortcuts, and maybe gestures. It won't work if there's too many pop-ups and drill downs to get to everything - it'll simply be awkward to use. I personally think demo'ing on the iPad is a more common use case than creation, but perhaps it's a worthy challenge. Take a look at powerpoint on the iPad, which is the best content-creation app so far, but even it is still awkward and doesn't have necessary shortcuts for fluid interaction.-
YES! I'm happy designing on my desktop, but then I want to "feel" it on the iPad. I don't need to edit there -- I can take notes on paper :)

Hi,
I recently downloaded a copy of Omnigraffle for the iPad. Compared to Balsamiq there's no question which app I would rather be using. So, when will you have an iPad application ready? -
-
Hi again,
I think Ben makes a good point about usability of wireframing and mock-up applications for the iPad. The Omnigraffle application is a bit awkward to use (and I think this has less to do with the app and more to do with the UI). So, maybe annotation and display of a mock-up (with all of the interactivity) would be ok. -
-
And I'll add that a great way to deliver finished or in progress mockups to the iPad/iPhone would be using a (free) Balsamiq developed local server on any Mac/PC that can wirelessly deliver the goods to the mobile presentation versions on the devices. In my experience using apps that have desktop counterparts or connections, a local server is the most user painless (if it works well - a lot don't). So you could just transfer the file to the device to take with you, and you could take it a step farther and have Mockups simulation mode run on a wireless device for testing your app prototype. Ie. when you run simulation mode on the desktop you can tell Mockups to run it on the nearby iPad/iPhone. Nothing beats having your prototype running on the actual device for usability checks. Just a thought. - Ben

Make you balsamiq mockups clickable by using Picture Link iPad App:
Picture Link is a super simple presentation app that lets you develop interactive mockups on your iPad regardless of what presentation program you are used to. Starting today, Picture Link offers a free version in the App Store. The basic idea is that you can link different slides with transparent hyperlink buttons. This makes it very easy to create clickable mockups in minutes.

We would really appreciate your feedback! -

If you want drag and drop functionality and to be able to move and resize components around with your touch, with the great usability provided by Balsamiq the answer is not the iPad, but the HP Touchsmart tm2 laptop, I use it everyday and it is great!
-
-
Even if the main application is still on the desktop, the iPad app will work great in combination.
I would like to make quick drawings with my finger on the iPad. The shapes should then be automatically converted to real controls. A circle would be a real circle that I can move and resize.
The number of controls will be limited for sure, but hey. To make a quick mockup this will be great. -
-
We need an iPad control we can draw within Balsamiq. Or let me resize the iPhone to be fatter. Something!
-
-
Lauren, you should be able to find an iPad mockup to suit you here: http://mockupstogo.net/tag/ipad
-
ah thanks, that will work for now!
-
-
Those are good, but not as useful as the iPhone elements. I like how those have transparent mode, etc. right now I'm using black boxes to cover up some layers to fake transparency (showing full height page in an iPad there is runoff)

I would really like the iPad controls to be integrated into Mockups initially. It would also be great to have a Mockups version running on the iPad but the main priority for me is getting an integrated tool for iPad on the desktop or in a browser.
Thanks! -
-
Mockups on iPad is teh shit!
We need! Now!
This will kill the competition for all other apps trying to "support" bmml -
-
If Mockups would run on iPad I would buy an iPad and would also be willing to buy a new Mockups license. This would really be great.
-
-
I would buy Balsamiq for iPad. I have the need RIGHT NOW to edit some mockups on my iPad and although there are two other apps that supposedly generate Balsamiq files, neither can actually open an existing Balsamiq file.
BUT, it is KEY that your app integrate with DropBox and Box.Net... this way, one can get Balsamiq files back and forth with ease.
I would pay for such an app... yes!

Just finished using imockups for the last 7 hours, because their export to BMML option I endup in the balsamiq website. I am sold on balsamiq , I am ready to fork the money. However I realize now I cant sport it back to imockups, and there is no ipad for balsamiq. That is big problem because all my designs and brainstorming sessions are done using ipads, on the train, in conferencen rooms, in the park etc
To answer an old question that was asked. I am using my ipad to do work, not just show things. Is too convinient to sit anywhere and start creating and putting ideas. When I show the executives the imockups screens, right in the ipad. They love it and I get funding.
In short please give us ipad. I will buy it -

I have used a number of of tools, none of which are as nice as Basalmiq.
With the new version of the Flex/Actionscript SDK due out in the next couple of weeks I would have to agree that is time to develop an iPad/Android Tablet version of Balsamiq. Heck I would be willing to help convert if needed. I would even consider a version that has some limited functionality such as no exporting, printing ... make it a pure design and preview tool.
The only other feature I would add when building a mobile version is to have a cloud service to sync my designs for me. Maybe strike a deal with dropbox.com or box.net or huddle or something like that. -
-
I hope this doesn't come across as an advertisement...we are long-time fans of Balsamiq and were frustrated that we couldn't use it on our iPads. So, we built an app that does just this!
You can import your bmml files (get it on to your iPad by using iTunes, emailing it or any file sharing app like Dropbox) with high fidelity and edit and present them using your iPad.
Free version here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mockup...
The free version lets you do everything but doesn't allow saving which the paid version does - http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mockup...
I hope you find it useful! -
-
Useful for sure, Too bad you are selling the paid version for a price that totally beats *anything* I have seen on the iPad until now, including GPS-mapping tools! :/

I don't really care if it runs on ipad or not.
I just want to do sketches for ipad. I've been waiting for this a long time.-
Hi James, you can create Mockups for iPad apps, and we even have some controls to help you get started: https://mockupstogo.mybalsamiq.com/pr...

Effective spending for effective earning. It's the theory of constraints.
LOL :)
The way I looks at it, why spend money on a more expensive tool that does 5 thousand things, when I only need it to do one thing really well.
The more money I save, the more I make on profit, and the more I can spend to grow my business. That is called good business practice.
