Android UI elements
Is it planned to include Android gui elements to the mockup UI Libary? The android elements are somewhat helpfull but Android style elements would be awesome.

Hi.
I finished creating an Android 4 Symbols library if you're interested in checking it out. https://mockupstogo.mybalsamiq.com/pr...
Download the BMML file directly from here and save to one of your assets folders to use as a Symbols library:
https://mockupstogo.mybalsamiq.com/pr...
In case you're unfamiliar with Symbols, they are re-usable components that you can customize. You can find documentation and tutorial for using Symbols is here:
http://support.balsamiq.com/customer/...
Hope this helps. -

Hi Falko, do you have some links to Android-specific stencils we could use as template? I guess we could look at the SDK too
-
-
You can download the SDK http://developer.android.com/sdk/1.1_... and when you launch the emulator there should be an application called "API Demos" it has samples of most of the the UI elements. You should be able to get images from there.
The emulator runs on all OS, so you should not have any problems :)
hope I could help -

To save us all a step, can you post some screens of the widgets you would like to see added?

That's very helpful Faiko, thanks!

I'd be also very grateful if you were able to integrate Android UI elements!
-
-
I'd like this one too. Windows Mobile UI components would also be of great use.

Hi all! is there any progress with android UI elements or a date when they will be available? Or does someone add them in the community area?
Would be really great!

Is there anyway the community could help to speed this up? 18-20 Android models to be released in the next few months = a very big user base soon.
How can we help, e.g., more detailed specifications for android elements, etc.? -

OK everyone, I hear Android talk heating up more and more. I'll see if Mariah can draw some of these controls this week and I hope to add them to the app soon. -

Thanks for working on this. Please let us know if there is a way for us to help out. A couple of thoughts come to my mind. First is to give examples as Falko has done. Ideally that would come with some comments about the most used elements. Some indications of some good apps that demonstrate usage of the UI elements could also be helpful.
Secondly, on a related note it would be nice to have headers and footers on the iphone table views. BTW, the multi-line table views was a huge addition. Also the ability to adjust font sizes on the table views. What we need from good wireframe/mockup tools as developers is 90% layout accuraccy. Without that we can't the the number of screens and screen control flow correct, which is really the point of the mockup tool for my company anyway.
Thanks for the hard work. We have been looking extensively in to tools and I think you have the right balance between quickness of the mockup and accuracy to get screen flows down.
Keep up the hard work! I have reccomended your tool too many people and I will continue to do so. I am an ex-Motorolan and I know well the guys who lead the Android development their. I will be happy to reccomend Balsamiq to them. I meet with one of the head development managers on Monday and will mention Balsamiq to him. -

Hi all! So today I spent some time trying to do Android controls using the existing controls. The result is here: http://mockupstogo.net/android-controls
What do you think? -
-
-
-
Not too bad for a start. Beware of the way the tabs are displayed on Android. We are very excited about the availability of Android controls in Mockups.

Any news on when this will be added to the desktop app, or has this feature been dropped?
-
Hi Gareth, have you seen these? http://mockupstogo.net/android-controls - with our upcoming components feature: http://is.gd/bv7Zt you'll be able to use these as if they were native, but in the meantime, you can copy and paste what you need. Hope this helps!
-
-
Thanks Peldi, cut and paste will save me some time for now. Do you have any idea on when the features will be implemented and will the new features be in the desktop product or only mockupstogo?

I would love to add this to my list of mockups. Consider me inspired.

Now in september and no delivery date announced, it's a pity.

Hi all, check out http://mockupstogo.net, there are Android and Windows Phone 7 elements there - with the upcoming Symbols feature, you'll be able to use the controls that come from there as if they were native controls.
-
-
Really nice work... I loved it. I will be nicer when you include them in the app.
Thanks! -
-
Any news about adding official Android support to balsamiq? It's a make or break feature for us.

Yes! Please add Android symbols to library. When will this happen?
-
-
-
-
That would be a great start! Feel free to use us a beta testers. We do a lot of Android wireframing.
-
-
Put me down as a beta tester also. We are doing Android Mockups all the time.
-
-
I'm also interested in getting more Android elements. Just today I was looking for the standard Android progress dialog.
-
-
I'm very interested in a more up to date Android UI elements, hopefully included in the desktop app... We also are continually using Balsamiq for both iPhone and Android apps.

Hi bugmehere, see these: https://mockupstogo.mybalsamiq.com/pr... - they are ready to be used as symbols in your apps: http://balsamiq.com/support/documenta...

2 years later... Balsamiq should really include Android UI elements!
In our company we are considering buying a Balsamiq license for Confluence (We are Atlassian partners) for help in our mobile projects.
The existence of Android elements are crucial for this decision, we develop both for iOS and Android and we liked a full solution, not a 50% one.
Moreover, although some elements can be found in the community, there is no native element for Android tabs -
-
Same remark as previous. Android is not a small Market. All our clients laugh at us because we provide mock-ups with an iOS look&feel. Please, do something, and you will earn much momentum. At the current time, you are just ridiculous!
-
-
Agreed. Doing Android mockups with iOS elements just doesn't work. We really need Android support and it is rather bizarre that Android isn't supported given how mainstream it has become.
-
-
Well, is Balsamiq funded by Apple ?
Now, seriously, I think you must support Android UI directly out of the box, as a standard feature of all the different editions of Balsamiq Mockups. -
-
Seriously? No android support? Damned... that would be the only reason to get rid of the balsamiq keygen and buy it.
-
-
I just bought Balsamiq and definitely need this too. There are a lot of templates we need - like the Action Bar, Dashboard, Quick Action Bar, appropriate Tabs, scrolling mechanisms etc.
-
-
Hi all, try these: https://mockupstogo.mybalsamiq.com/pr... - they are ready to be used as symbols in your apps: http://balsamiq.com/support/documenta... - if these aren't good enough, let us know and we'll improve them!
-
Just on the basis of the thread here it feels to me that customers are looking for integration similar to the iPhone. I agree with that slant...
-
-
-
-
-
Those ones are pretty outdated Peldi, that's the issue. We need the action bar, more standard Android UI elements. A lot of those are from very old (2+ years old) UI elements that are either deprectead or changed.
Dashboard, quick action bar, correct looking tabs are some stuff I could really use. Take a look here:
http://www.androiduipatterns.com/p/an...-
Thanks Nick, we'll take a look right after myBalsamiq ships.

Hello Giacomo.
I have used those for some of my Android mockups and they are nice. But, again, why don't you guys integrate this in Balsamiq instead of forcing us (your clients) to install it as a plugin?
Also, most of those android mocks are just plain... we need more dynamic UI elements like the ones in the iPhone.
If the money you guys are earning is not enough to work a couple of weeks and bring Android support... why don't just stop this? You can open source Balsamiq and someone is going to really care about offering native Android support. I'm just saying.-
Hi casidiablo, sorry you're frustrated about us dragging our feet on native Android support. We are a small team, so we can only work on a few features at the time: http://balsamiq.com/products/mockups/... Right now we're focused on our web app and fixing the font bugs. Native Android support is on the list, we'll get there.

Just adding my voice to the folks that really need Android support. Disappointed that I bought Balsamiq and Android appears to be such an afterthought. Seriously, the Android market has eclipsed iOS in size and # of developers - you guys need to know your market better.
-
-
Yes, android UI elements are really important since the Android OS market surpasses the iOS market. Action Bar, Dashboard, Quick Action Bar, appropriate Tabs, scrolling mechanism are needed.
-
-
hello guys, Peldi. I'm not sure how good is to use your forum to promote my product but we have some of Android controls done in our mockup tool, and will have the rest soon. we really need feedback on those , so anyone who wants to use it let me know.

I agree I'm definitely getting very frustrated now having been several months since I purchased Balsamiq and not seeing anything yet addressed in this obviously high need.
-
-
in MockupBuilder We plan to have a list of IPAD controls(around 20) to be done next week or 2..
-
-
-
-
Any news or calendar on supporting natively Android UI elements?
Our demo ended and during this week our company is going to decide upon buying it from you or choosing someone else. -
-
-
It's pretty embarrassing that you still don't have Android support built in. The ones you refer to are not built-in and pretty outdated.
And this request is 2 years old. WOW. -
-
Can someone here please work with me to come up with a list of android-specific elements you'd want to see converted to be native controls? From what I've seen on my new Android Tablet, every single UI piece could already be constructed using existing pieces, like we did on the symbol libraries here: https://mockupstogo.mybalsamiq.com/pr...
If you're interested in rolling up your sleeves and helping out, email me peldi@balsamiq.com-
Android controls are a pretty good start: simply add them as native from Desktop, add the "magic touch" of the properties inspector and the first step is done !
I have to admit that I am jealous / frustrated ;) as an Android developer that you did so much for iOS developers :D -
-
This should help *greatly*. Please get these in there and I will shout your praises from the rooftop!

The first problem is that it's a pain to use the Android elements that you posted, compared to the corresponding iPhone versions which are integrated into the app. With Android gaining more and more market share, it's ridiculous to not have native support in the app.
Second is that there are certainly some UI elements that you don't have. When I originally posted to the topic, I complained that there was no progress bar, although the one under Media is fairly similar. I don't see an indeterminate progress spinner either.
Other things missing:
iPhone has a horizontal and vertical keyboard; Android does not
Horizontal phones with the title bar correctly rotated
I'm sure there are many other elements that could be added, but those are the ones that already exist on iPhone.-
Agreed. I sort of assumed there would be a set of integrated Android elements. Please add this.
-
-
Agreed. This is currently my decision factor on purchasing the app. Without proper Android support there's not much benefit for me.

Yep... bought Balsamiq. Want to use it for Android and it does not seem to be supported all that well. I downloaded the Android controls from mock-ups to go, but the very first item I need (the action bar) is not part of it... come on!
-
-
Well, my trial ends in 5 days and I'd like this too... I have a heard time believing that Android is going away anytime soon so I'll need to go somewhere else - anyone have any suggestions for something better fit for Android Mock-ups?
-
I'm quite impressed by the following tools for iOS and Android mockups. http://proto.io/

Just a heads-up that Google has released a set of standard stencils for use in Photoshop, Omnigraffle, and Fireworks. These would likely be the best basis for creating a set of Balsamiq library controls.

Thanks, Josh. I have forwarded this info to dev!
