After upgrading to 2.1.1, all texts show about 2px up (I'm using system fonts). I tryed switching to the new balsamiq font but the problem persists.
Any idea ?
-
I have no idea, but I see the same. That's why I have to go back to 2.0.24. That's very unlucky to change something like that for all of us already in the middle of some existing project.
I have several hundred mockups, and I simply have no time to adjust them all. -
-
Or you set the font back to Comic Sans or Chalkboard. Either or.
Though you will get the problems with the clipping bug again.-
I'm using system fonts so I don't think this will solve my problem. The vertical alignment of fonts in labels and other text containers seems to have changed.

-
-
-
-
It's even worse with Tree Panes. Each line has an offset of 2 pixels. I have several mockups with trees with 20 lines and more and some icons or overlays aligned... :-/
I never run into the clipping bug, but it would be nice to have a bugfix that does not introduce new bugs. I agree this to be a rude statement :-) Perhaps it's possible to change the baseline of the new font so the layout of the old mockups don't change? -
-
I can take up with horizontal size change (and make fixes here and there), but why changing vertical alignment ?
ps: this is not complaining/ranting or anything like it, I just want to know if this can somehow be solved .... -
-
Vertical alignment issues are because the style sheets had to change from the Comic Sans/Chalkboard fonts.
I'm not sure exactly how the changes affected the controls you're referring to. You might want to check the pre-release version which has the next iteration of style sheet changes. Would be good to have specific examples of controls that are affected.
Tree pane have also been fixed in the pre-release.
If you want to try the pre-release, you can install it here:
http://balsamiq.com/products/mockups/...
After you've played with it, if you want to roll back to the stable release, simply go to the download page and re-install using the Update button here:

I had this issue uploading an existing project to myBalsamiq - I had to move all text / paragraph controls down a few pixels so that things look reasonably aligned again.
It manifests in some of the controls, which can't be realigned. The picture below shows the "old" breadcrumb control and the "new" breadcrumb control, where the arrows look lower than the text really because the vertical align on the font has been changed.
That said, I do realize we're not after pixel perfection here.

-
Yep, that's what going on. The new build seems to fix some controls (I think I saw the labels correct) but others are still showing misaligned.
I know this is not pixel perfect, but I think this is not the case for an exception on those bases.
Here's an example of my old multiline button (shrinked to show only 1 line)
and the new one (using the buil 999.949)

Here is an example of a simple mockup, compared 2.0.24 with nightly 999.952. This is a killer for any update of Mockups. Please fix this with some of the next releases. The sooner, the less problem you will have with mockups that are created with the 2.1.1 version.

And by the way, the triangles "v" and ">" are looking kind of fuzzy. Might be, there is already an open topic for that, but I didn't find one.

Thanks for the feedback, Andi. Along with the embedded font, the apps has new stylesheets to correct changes, and we're recommending that people not upgrade if they have issues on existing Mockups.
It sounds like what you're specifically asking for in this case is a correction to the default padding of tree control and datagrid rows so that they can be overlaid as you do. I will add that as a bug report.
By the way, it will help to get specific examples like this. -
-
For what I could see after upgrading, there were many controls affected (that's why I reverted to 2.0.24). Would it be worth a quick check of all controls behavior from your side ? I mean taking the general observation as the bug report.

You must be kidding :-)
I have some 800 mockups and I don't change any of them. You have a large base of customers and I'm not sure they'd like to change their mockups due to a program change. I think already created file must be compatible. I'd rather stick with the old version than to spend one hour fixing a layout.
This might sound harsh, but we have the same issue with our products. But if you can adapt your style sheets, it might turn out, that only some small part must be updated to be compatible with the old layout.
Don't get me wrong, Mockups is still the best tool I used to mockup screens! -
-
No, I'm not kidding, Andi. We took it seriously when we knew that layout issues would be effected--we said we'd offer to try to help, but the first approach would be to systematically look at the controls that have inconsistencies before offering to actually find ways to fix files. That's why we're recommending that some people stay with 2.0.24. The font is the only major new feature in 2.1.x right now.
But you're not being harsh. We're on the same page. We're saying that we want to make changes to the stylesheet for the embedded font so that layout requires less if no modification to existing Mockups as much as we can.
From a design perspective, it pains me a great deal that this is an issue, because adapting the new stylesheet and the new font to metrics from Comic Sans and Chalkboard has been a serious pain, but the only real solution to the problems that those system fonts presented. We're trying our best to find ways to make it less painful.
Believe, me, I don't want to deal with the font issues that Comic Sans and Chalkboard left us with at all, but we will try to do what can to help. But the best solution may be to wait. -

Hello everyone! We think we addressed most if not all of your awesome reports. Please take a look! http://blogs.balsamiq.com/product/201... -

Thanks Peldi, I've tested the new release and I'm very thankful for the fixes. Still, there are a couple left so I'm reporting those I come across:
- My report on the shrinked multiline button isn't fixed (though I recognize it's a bit of an edge case, I'm sure many use it that way).
- In the following elements, texts still show with an incorrect vertical alignment (they are some pixels moved to the top):
* link bar
* drop down
* text input
* data grid
* list (most noticeable, list header)
* icon and text label, pointy button
* checkbox
* subtitle.....and others, but this would be a good start
I'm using system fonts in W7. Until 2.0.24, everything was very well. I don't know how your mockups for desktop handles this, but if we could just use the same config (or style sheets or whatever) that we had until 2.0.24, but again, you must know better than no one how would be the best way to proceed.
The fact is that the current situation isn't quite nice and this does not only affect our already made mockups but also the new ones.
I know that by using system fonts and taking care of this details we are going a little further mockups intention of providing raw sketches, still, I think this things don't add to the sketchy impression but a flawed one. Example with the icon and label control:
Isn't software development all about challenges ? ;)
Thanks, congrats and all the best !

Hi Rafa,
The shrinked multiline button not being fixed is my fault. I retested, but didn't look closely enough to notice the difference. I will write a new font issue for this and put it in dev queue. Thank you for your patience. (I'm also now retesting each of the controls you list and taking a closer look.) -
-
Thanks louanne.
I did a bit more testing and found out that drop down and text input are actually alright, sorry for my mistake. -
-
Hi rafa,
After testing ALL controls with text, here is a list of controls I reported as being vertically aligned slightly higher than before the font update. These are system font tests only. I am working on the embedded. Thanks!
-multiline button
-link bar
-data grid (table)
-list
-icon w/label (label seems slightly higher)
-pointy button
-checkbox
-accordian
-alert
-button bar
-horizontal curly brace
-iPhone picker
-text input
-title headline
-vertical tabs
-window/dialog
-date chooser
-group
-numeric stepper
-horizontal tabs -

I think some people call this "taking the bull by the horns" :)
thank you very much. -
-
Hi Louanne, just confirming that we don't have this fixes in any of the last 2 releases ... and wondering about the status.
thanks a lot.
ps: don't mean to stress you, I'm still using v 2.0.24 while waiting. -
-
Hi rafa,
I believe most everything reported has been fixed. The latest release is 2.1.6 http://balsamiq.com/download and I have not seen the problem here.
If you have a good example file with the issue raising its ugly head, I would love to get a copy. These bugs are top priority for us. Can you send a copy of the offending file to support@balsamiq.com with a reference to this GS issue 'All texts moved about 2px up after 2.1.1 upgrade?'
Thanks so much for helping us with this, rafa. -
-
Hey Louanne, thanks for your reply. I've gathered a few examples and emailed both the .bmml file and a .png export. The list is not exhaustive and I think they are all present in your list, so maybe it's better to check after your list.
Thank you for your great work.
